16th Annual Fall Color Tour/Trail Ride

September 26-28, 2008   Camp Grayling: Grayling, Michigan

The Annual Camp Grayling Color Tour is designed for our trucks to be used as they were

designed to be used, off-road. The trails near Camp Grayling provide challenges and the scenery provides the color. The camaraderie, companionship, and general fun are provided by the members.

Due to the scale of Camp Grayling and the surrounding State and Federal Forest, the

Color Tour has access to a large variety of trails.  While some of the travel is on paved, well maintained county roads, most of the tour is on trails sure to challenge a 40-50 year old vehicle and its operator. The amount of space available has also allowed the use of four different base camps over the years to let new areas and trails to be discovered by many participants who return year after year.

Since the Camp Grayling Color Tour started in 1993, several groups and numerous

individuals have worked hard to make it a continuing success.  Today, the events primary

sponsor is the Michigan Museum Of Military Transport (MMMT) with much appreciated

co-sponsorship by the Great Lakes Chapter of the MVPA (GLMVPA).

Attendance grew rapidly from 10 vehicles at the 1993 event to 40 trucks coming out to play in 1996.  In the years since, vehicle attendance has remained fairly consistent between 35 and 45, largely due to fluctuations in weather, fuel costs and competing regional MV events.  The participants represent a wide-ranging cross section of those who enjoy and appreciate old military iron.  Many great friendships have grown among those who enjoy the opportunity to view the beautiful fall colors of Michigan's North, while some consider this their primary annual vacation.

While the Trail Ride officially takes place the last weekend of September, a growing number of people have been showing up three or four days early to enjoy the trails with friends. One of the joys each year is not only see who shows up, but what "new" toy they bring.  Over the years a good assortment of Jeeps, Mules, 3/4 and 1¬ tons, deuces, and five ton trucks have participated regularly.  In addition, some less common military vehicles have taken to the trails.  These include Kubelwagens, Schwimmwagens, a Ford GPA, halftracks, Unimogs, a couple different Volvo models, a Ferret, Gama-Goats, an Otter, and even a motorcycle or two.

This event is open only to members and family of MMMT or GLMVPA because of insurance requirements by the government agencies involved, but memberships are nominally priced and available at the event. Every effort is made to keep costs minimal so as many members as possible may attend.

Registration fee for the 2008 Camp Grayling Color Tour is $10.00 if pre-registered, $20.00 on site. Primitive camping for tents or trailers is available at our base camp, with more "civilized" accommodations available a short distance away in the Grayling area.

Primary contact for this event is Brian Anderson at (989) 348-5191.  He needs volunteer help to work on registration, food and camp activities, fundraising and donations, and trail leaders.
