The M900 5-ton series was designed as the replacement for the M800 series trucks in use since the early '70s.   GL member Chris Causley's father was actually involved in the development of the new 900 series, which entered production in 1982.   Powered by the same Cummings NHC 250 diesel engine as the 800 series, it went on to become the 5-ton of the '80s.   It differed though in its use of an Allison five speed automatic transmission, and full air brakes instead of the air over hydraulic system used in earlier types.   It also has a two-speed air operated synchronized transfer case, and with its 81 gallons of onboard fuel, it is capable of a 300 miles cruising range.   Although the M932 and M932A1 models were built by AM General in South Bend, IN, all of the A2 units, including this one, were built by Bowen-McLaughlin-York in a plant in Maryville, OH.

This 1989 M932A2 5-ton tractor is owned by Dave Oheim from Waterford, MI.   He picked it up in Maryland in 2007 from a private owner.   He said the condition of the truck was pretty good when he got it.   Matter of fact, it was good enough that he was able to drive out there with a friend, and turn around the next day and drive it the 550 miles home.   He told me that it has been a good vehicle, with nothing more than normal maintenance required since he's had it, and he doesn't know anything about the truck's history, but it did come wearing an Air Force plate.

When asked why he wanted a 5-ton, or a big truck in general, he told me that he has always liked off-road capable vehicles, and after seeing a DNR owned deuce w/winch up close, he was obsessed with buying one to use as a hunting camper.   At the time, he wasn't even aware of how big the MV hobby was, but after searching the web for at least 2 years, he ended up stumbling across a deuce with a van box and a winch, and bought it.   Dave said he was really hooked after all of the great people he had met in the search for parts and info, had turned him on to the MV shows, trail rides, and other events honoring our veterans.

[Dave wanted a 5-ton tractor because of its multiple uses.] [He also likes the security of having another big truck available to tow his deuce if necessary.]

He continued that he eventually had the desire for a 5-ton tractor because of its multiple uses with the myriad of trailers (lowboy, flatbed, van, dump, etc), the security of having another big truck available to tow his deuce if necessary.   The M932 was selected because he liked the true air brakes of the 900 series vs. single circuit juice brakes of older series trucks, and of course he wanted a winch, so it had to be a "932".   " I didn't initially care for the idea of a five speed automatic transmission", says Dave, "but I have to admit it spoils you when just cruising around town."   You got to love just cruising around town... in a 5-ton!
